Mighty Minute
Dean Synan was today's Mighty Minute. He
started Dean's mailing to do postcards, etc. But he did
things backwards. He then bought the oldest list company
in Arizona. They had the best residential database bar
none! Now they also compile the information. So they
gather the information, put it into a master database and use it
to do precision mailings. If you need information that is
not in their database, he can get it somewhere else for you.
If these three business ventures didn't keep him busy enough,
Dean also recently became president of the Phoenix 100 Club.
Question of the Day
No question.
Main Speaker
Stephan Chilton
Chilton Services, Inc.
Stephan was born across the pond in a little
place called England. He went to school there all the way
to college. After that, the life and times of Stephan
Chilton are hard to follow. He bounced around a lot from
trade to trade and country to country. As he puts it,
instead of getting the 7-year itch for women, he gets the
12-month itch for countries. The key points of his life
are summarized below...
-
He spent 3 years as an electrical engineer.
-
He joined the army and stayed for 9 years.
-
He finished his electrical engineer courses.
-
He traveled a lot in the army and received
tremendous training.
-
He built bridges in the army. The enemy
blew 'em up. He rebuilt them.
-
He got his education degree and became a P.E.
teacher.
-
In the army he was on the rugby team.
-
He got married and the lived in Germany and
loved it.
-
They moved back to England but there was no
work.
-
He took a big contract and moved back to
Berlin.
-
The 12-month itch attacked him and he moved
back to England.
-
Again, there was no work in England.
Dismayed, he vowed never to work for anyone again and opened
his own contracting business. He had 6 people working
for him.
-
As a recovering workaholic, he purchased a
timeshare in Spain. They used it every year for six
years.
-
The itch attacked again. He sold his
business and moved his family to Spain. He didn't have a
job. He didn't speak the language. But he had a
blast!
-
After he spent all his money he opened another
business in Spain building swimming pools. He was on the
fast track to becoming a jack-of-all-trades, master of none.
He had 27 employees. Spain was a gorgeous place to live.
Many Europeans had second homes there.
-
Their daughters moved back to England to go to
college. They were a close family that did everything
together. So Stephan and his wife followed the girls
back to England.
-
Stephan had to retire from playing rugby due
to an injury.
-
He took up martial arts and mastered it.
He even opened a studio in England.
-
He was approached by an English school in
Spain to teach P.E. With Stephan, its sports first, work
later.
-
But then he and his wife got to missing their
kids again. He sold everything and went back to England.
-
England is the worst place to live. It
rains all the time and there is no damn work! He had two
clients that lived in Mesa. The encouraged him to visit.
They came for a vacation. Liked the climate. Then
they flew back to England. They didn't like the climate.
They moved to Arizona.
-
You should know how the story goes by
now...They spent 12 months playing around. New country,
didn't speak the language, ran out of money, and so on.
-
Stephan managed to get a job as a project
manager. It was an eye opening experience. His
employee sat on his but all day making tons of money while
sub-contractors did all the work. In England you did
everything! There was no specializing or you didn't
work.
-
Also eye-opening and disturbing was the
quality of work that he has seen. The people building
these home don't have the skills. And the people
supervising them don't care. They know that less than
50% of the buyers will notice and complain. They take
their chances.
-
Stephan is a man of integrity. He stands
behind his work. He quit the position and opened his own
company, Chilton Services, Inc. He is a one-man show and
prefers it that way.
-
Stephan's trades are extensive. He can
do anything. If you need repair or maintenance, 90% of
the time he can do the job.
-
Racquetball anyone? Stephan has picked
it up and would like to master this sport too.
-
He loves to hike,
-
Oh, and he drinks a lot!
-
He has run 3 marathons.
-
He doesn't watch a lot of sports but he plays
a lot.
-
He has taught ATC (Air Training Corps) where
he taught the guys how to shoot, horse ride, canoe, etc.
It's the type of job he would love to have again.
-
He is also a certified personal trainer.
-
Oh...he is also a nutritionist.
-
He is also a brain surgeon. (OK, I made
that last one up. But with Stephan, you never know!)
