There is no current membership incentive drive.  Your only incentive to bring members in should be your pride in MABE.  With that said, members are encouraged to make a commitment to bring in one "quality" new member in the next 12 months.   It starts with a commitment and ends with an action.

Greg Stewart referenced the Chamber of Commerce guide for category ideas:  Hair Stylist, Bike Shop, Camera Repair, Car Wash, Catering, Cell Phone Service, Coffee Shop.  Do any of you frequent these businesses?  Do you know the owner?

Mighty Minute

Today's Mighty Minute is an alert.  Bob Busch was recently a victim of fraud.  His savings account was wiped out by someone who printed up checks using his savings account number and proceeded to go on a shopping spree at Wal-Mart.  The ironic thing is, being a savings account, checks are not supposed to be written against it.  Bob's money has not yet been returned by the bank.  He had to fill out paperwork and they said it could take up to 14 days to process.  Since his account number is not on any checks or receipts, Bob is convinced that it is an inside job as he shreds everything and there isn't any other way someone would get this account number.

Jim Bache had this happen to him too.  All they need is your checking account number.  When you write a check, you are giving that number away.  A common scam is to produce checks that look like payroll checks.  They put your account number on it and then cash it on Fridays or the 15th of the month when tellers are very busy and don't check things as thoroughly.

Wayne Unruh had a similar problem with his Home Depot account.  Someone charged up several thousand dollars in gift certificates, etc.  Home Depot actually noticed the unusual activity and contacted Wayne.  Wayne is also convinced that it is an inside job since his account number and information is not printed on receipts.  These crooks are very smart.  They don't go over $5000.  They know that if it is under this limit it is not worth the fed's time to prosecute.

Dean Synan had a customer whose young daughter's social security number was stolen and used.  In fact, many of his customers have been victim's of fraud.

Chris Curran, along with several other members, have received bogus emails from someone claiming to be PayPal.  They send you to a fake site that looks like PayPal and ask you to give them personal information.  Don't do it!  It is a scam!

Question of the Day

None.

Main Speaker

James E. Bache, P.C.
Attorney at Law

Jim began his speech with a lawyer joke.  I think all members would agree that lawyers should NOT tell lawyer jokes!

Jim was born in 1955.  He is a devout Catholic...He had 3 priests at his wedding!   He has two daughters that he is very proud of.  The oldest is Leann.  She is a self proclaimed nerd.  She will graduate this quarter from the prestigious University of Chicago.  She will next go into a 6-year PhD program.  She is extremely intelligent.  She scored a 1570 out of 1600 on her SAT's.  Colleen is their youngest.  She is a freshman at Xavier College Prep.  She is also extremely smart but not as much of a perfectionist about it as Leann.

One of Jim's hobbies is flying.  He is a private pilot and owns his own plane which he keeps at Chandler Municipal.  His interest in flying began during little league.  His coach told the team that anyone who got a grand slam during the season would get to go up in his plane with him.  There were no grand slams but Jim had the most homeruns so he got to go flying.  This first flight enticed him.  Jim had cousins that learned to fly.  While visiting on vacation, they wanted to take aerobatic lessons.  Jim went too.  He started taking lessons at 15 (when he could reach the pedals) and got his license at 17 which is the youngest you can get it.

Jim is also involved with Kiwanis.  Through this group he interacts with kids.  He started reading for a 4th grade class in an impoverished area.  They were learning about flying, lift, etc.  Jim was asked to teach them about this so he got on the internet to freshen up his knowledge.  He used a model airplane wing, which he brought in this morning, as a prop to teach the kids.

Jim's family owned an ice cream plant in Phoenix.  They sold it in 1984.  Jim worked there as a teenager.  It was during this time that Jim decided he wanted to be a lawyer.  This idea stuck with him all through high school.  He decided he would be a history major since the research skills would help him when he went into law.

His GPA during his first year of college was not so great and he worried about getting into law school.  He also had to deal with the chance that he would loose credit for his first year of classes if he changed majors.  A counselor helped him by developing a new category.  Jim was to get his Economic/Accounting degree.  He got a 2nd in history.  He sat for and failed the CPA.  But he did get accepted into law school.  He graduated from ASU law school but was not in the top 10%.  The top 10% got to write for the law journal.  Even though he was not in the top 10%, he did get his writing published which is something he is very proud of.

Jim has been practicing law since 1980.  He began at a firm that had CPA's and lawyers.  He was hired to do probate but spent most of his time handling divorce cases.  He left that firm in 1985 and, with one exception, has not and will not do another divorce case.  They leave him with a bad taste in his mouth for the law.

Jim is part of the first group of lawyers to specialize in Trust & Estate Law and he is one of only 5 or 6 in the East Valley.  He passed around 3 handouts today.  Two are available here.
