Membership Report
(Click here to go to the Membership page)

We are happy to announce that Guy Sawyer has officially joined the group!  If you haven't already done so, please make sure to introduce yourself.

Roman Okonowski asked members if they did their homework.  If you forgot what it was, members were to...

  1. Think about something (service or product) that they use during the week; and

  2. Someone they do business with during the week.

Both of these avenues should help members to come up with good candidates for membership.

Lisa Schnaidt would like to see a roofer and a heating & A/C company join the group.

Wayne Unruh knows a Heating & A/C guy but he is on the west side of town.

Mike Whalen has been happy with the service he has received from his Heating & A/C guy but he has not known him long enough.

Roger Carpenter knows the owner of company that provides ink jet cartridge refill service.

Greg Stewart would like to see a lock smith in the group.

Main Speaker

Roger Carpenter
Red Kangaroo Wines

Roger Carpenter was born in London than moved to Australia.  He left school and went straight into the insurance business where he worked for 35 years in various capacities.  Of all the people he met, none of them had planned on this career.  They were all there by accident.

Roger discovered wine in the 1980's.  before that it was beer and boxed wines.  He got involved with one of the oldest wine clubs in the country.  They had a monthly luncheon where they tasted wines, judged them, etc.  Once a year you were invited to cook for 50-60 people in the club.  It was a great honor but also very stressful as there were high expectations.

Roger has been coming to the Valley since the early 1990's.  It was in the late 1990's that he started to get sick of his job.  He was looking for something else to do.  He had heard that you should do something that you have a passion for.  He had a passion for golf and wine.  The PGA was ready for him.  During the Christmas of 2000 he found the Kangaroo Wines franchise.

Roger gave the group a brief history in wines and talked about his own shop.  Just a few of the things he mentioned:

  • The difference between old world and new world wines - New world wines tell you the age and where the wine is from.

  • Being a new country and not held to tradition, Australian wine makers we able to try new techniques and take gambles.

  • Australia is second only to Italy in wine imports.

  • 60% of the wine industry is controlled by 4 companies.

  • Roger sees Australian wines in shops here that he never saw in Sidney.  They are produced specifically for export.

  • He sells wines you won't find anywhere else.  If you start see ing it on the shelves at grocery stores, he takes them off of his.

  • Yes, there is a machine that picks grapes.

  • No, its not the grapes that give wine its color.  It is the contact with the skins.

  • Arizona is not a good place to grow wine.  We grow grapes full of water but with no taste. They need cool climates.

  • Be suspicious if one vineyard offers all varieties of wines.  Certain wines need to grow under certain conditions.

  • There has to be an importer, a distributor and a retailer.  And none of them can be related.

We are heading into Roger's peak season.  They have a bar and offer happy hour on Friday's.  They do weekly tastings and can even host your next party.  They also has gift baskets available.
