The group discussed potential new
members. Jean Batt knows a hair dresser but wanted to know
how much business she would get from the group before asking her
to join. Randy Clark knows both an A/C & Heating man and a
Duct company that would love to join but they just can't make
the Friday morning meetings. Chris Curran is going to
complete part 1 of the membership application for a title
company. Dave Spiess knows a business writer that can help
you with press releases, business brochures, etc.
Continue to think about MABE and
prospective members between 8:30am today until 7.15am next
Friday!

Greg Stewart wants to know...Are you
struggling to find descent applicants?
Greg Stewart - I have had such a hard time
finding people. People come in wanting to dictate to me
what hours they will work.
Mark Dreher - I had to pay $30,000 in
recruiter fees to hire accountants. There is such a
demand, they don't need recruiters to help them.
Dave Spiess - I tried a temp service and
it is actually working out. You have to pay a premium for
the first 12 months but you would have had to pay that money in
advertisement, training, etc. This way they come already
pre-qualified and pretty welled trained and if you don't like
them you can request a replacement. If you do like them,
you can hire them permanently. It works well for
administrative staff.

Inside Jobs, Inc.
Keith Miller is very happy to be a
member of MABE. Even though he doesn't announce a lot of his
inside leads, he does a great deal of business with other members.
Today Keith gave a cafeteria-style
talk on various topics.
The Spine
Keith brought in the infamous spine for demonstration to show us
what we look like on the inside. The bones in our spine are
separated by disks. They serve as shock absorbers, separators
and our connection to the nervous system. We were made to be
on all fours. Since we choose to walk on just two, we end up
with a lot of pressure on our lower back. This area takes the
grunt of our load all day long.
The spine is flexible. It was
made to move and bend. If you wake up stiff, the best thing to
do is stretch out. When we stop or reduce the movement in our
bones, that is when arthritis can flare up.
As you get older, running can be
hard on your body, especially in the knee and hip area. All
the force goes first to your feet. When the feet can no longer
take the pressure, it moves up to the knees and then to the hip
area. This is why many runners have problems with the upper
leg muscles.
When people jog they tend to go on
the same course in circles. But the ground is rarely even.
You are usually running at a slant and thereby putting more pressure
on one side. It is better to turn and reverse your route
so you even out the pressure.
The
Feet
Shoes can be rough on our feet. Especially high heel,
pointed shoes that women often wear. Your toes get all
crunched up and your feet are arched t0o much and this all leads to
painful arches, bunions and calluses.
Men are also at risk. Make
sure to buy shoes that fit. And check the angle of
the tread on the bottom of the soles. This is what tells your
foot the direction to move in. They should be even.
The Hand
We have a lot of problems with our wrists. The age of
computers doesn't help. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can occur if
you are not careful about the position you use to type. You
should be sitting with your legs uncrossed and your wrists even with
your forearms. CTS can also lead to what is know as tennis
elbow.
Nutrition
I noticed that when I started eating bigger breakfasts here, I
started to get real tired at work. It is OK to eat what you
like as long as you balance it with exercise. Fad diets are
common. But they key is just to be committed to what you are
going to do and eat. You want to make sure you have the proper
balance of proteins and carbohydrates.
Everything we eat turns to sugar.
Our bodies run on sugar. But if you eat to much of the bad
foods, the excess gets stored as fat. So unless you are
burning these reserves by running marathons, watch what you eat.
Beds
There are a lot of advertisements out there about the perfect
bed. When you shop for a bed just keep three things in mind.
(1) It should be comfortable to you. Lay on it. Test it
out. (2) Make sure you have a 30 day return period. (3)
Know its purpose. Despite the ad claims, you won't sleep in
one position all night long. People turn in bed at least 22
times a night. Our body's change as do our habits, stresses,
etc. What is comfortable now, may not be in 5 years.
Vitamins
There is good calcium and junk calcium. And only one type
helps prevent osteoporosis. Don't be misled by faulty
advertisements. The latest hype is over Coral Reef Calcium.
First, it grows near polluted waters. And it is the wrong type
of calcium...it does not help osteoporosis.
Women
Women in particular are being targeted by advertisers.
There is a pill for everything (osteoporosis, menopause, etc.).
Again, don't be misled. Eat healthy and exercise regularly and
you won't need all those pills.
