Question of the Day

Dave Spiess has a lease coming up for renewal.  Does anyone know what the market is like?

Patricia Cox - It is soft.

Mark Dreher - A lot of people are choosing to buy their own building instead of leasing.  But you need to make sure it makes sense for your company.  If your business is growing or shrinking, you don't want to buy too much or too little space.  Buying is a long term commitment and it may not be easy to sell your building if your needs change.

Bob Busch - It also depends on your type of business.  It is probably not a good idea to buy if you are in retail.  The foot traffic at your location could move elsewhere and you would be stuck.

What is minimum wage?

Don Ellis - It is $5.15 per hour.  But that is the federal guideline.  Arizona doesn't have a minimum wage.  If you are a small  mom & pop shop that doesn't make much annually and you don't take credit cards, you can pay your employees whatever you want.

Phyllis Prater - I can't even get a sitter for that amount!

Main Speaker

MABE Committees
Committee members sat together today to go over the purpose and agenda for their group.

MEMBERSHIP (Represented by Mike Whalen)
Rather than focus on a bid membership drive, the membership committee felt it would be more important to focus on our pride in this group.  It is a privilege to be asked to join this group.  When we invite someone to join, it should be someone that we feel would make a quality member that would bring more value to the group.  We don't need to grow to 100 or more members.  When you grow too big it makes it more uncomfortable for both new and old members to share business issues and ideas.

MENTORING
(Represented by Mark Dreher)
Once we get new members we need to make them feel like they are an important part of this group.  This is a very intimidating group.  Many people have been members for a long time and have developed close relationships with other members.  We need to make sure the new members feel included.  Different personalities and business click better than others.  We need to team new members up with members that will help them feel comfortable.  One idea is for 2 members to take them out for a buddy lunch.

SOCIAL (Represented by Althea Bussert)
The social committee discussed different events.  Dave Lathrop is working on a spring rafting trip.  Althea is still working on the Flagstaff Weekend  at Arizona Mountain Inn.  (Note:  The sign up sheet for this event went around again.  She needs at least 7 couples to sign up or she will have to change dates.  If you plan on going, please let her know right away.)  Joe Hesch and Althea Bussert are working on a local event to take place in late spring/early summer.

SUNSHINE (Represented by Jana Greene)
This committee used their time this morning to establish some guidelines and a budget for what the group should do for different occasions (birth, death, illness, etc).  It was agreed that some occasions would arise that would require a different approach and possibly a board decision.  They also agreed that the sunshine committee should be responsible for calling on missing members to make sure they are OK.

BUSINESS PROMOTION
(Represented by Keith Miller)
This group was formed today. They would like to see the return of more business discussions.  We all have challenges that we could talk about but for some reason we don't open up anymore.  They also recommend having two 15-minute speakers each week instead of one 30-minute speaker.  Members would get a chance to get in front of the group more often without worrying about what to say for 30 minutes.  They suggested having a regular happy hour at various businesses as well.  This would be another way to promote one's business in a more relaxed, informal setting.

RESOLUTION
(Represented by Lisa Wolfe)
This group was formed to mediate differences that arise from category conflicts, speaker issues, crossovers, etc.  It was decided that the "committee" approach to dealing with issues would be more effective and fair than having one person make the final decision or trying to leave it up to 50 members to come to a consensus.  This group will also work with other committee leaders to resolve issues in their respective areas.
