This week's leads focus...

Business Spotlight

Charles Hultstrand was today's Business Spotlight.  Chuck grew up in Arizona.  He got his business degree from ASU and his law degree from UofA.  His school preference is irrelevant.  He is an AB-rated lawyer that has been practicing law for over 25 years.  In this time he has practiced in just about every area of law in every level of court.  He has written between 25-30 appeals.  For the last 10 years he has focused on business litigation.  About 50% of his business is trying to keep his clients out of court.  If you have any legal issue regarding your business ask Chuck, Jim Bache or Chris Curran about it.  If they can't help you, they will find someone that can.

Notable Mentions

Dave Spiess was given a plaque today in honor of his term served as president of MABE.

If you are going to promote an item, make sure you have it in stock first.  This is a real big pet peeve of Stuart Schindler.

Mark Dreher gave the group an update on the land development in a section of Pinal county that he is involved with through the East Valley Partnership.  If you would like to learn more about this project, please contact Mark.

Main Speaker

Joe Zingale
Berghoff Design Group

Joe Zingale began his speech with some words of wisdom and then proceeded to give a public announcement about the importance of keeping your stress level under control, seeing a doctor about those chest pangs and indulging in a lot of red wine and sex.  These things will go a long way to preserving your health.

Joe spent the better part of his life circling Lake Eerie and he has the map to prove it.  After graduating college he went to work for Detroit Diesel.  He worked in lots of different departments while there including one that worked with the military and required security clearance.  He was in his late 20's and wanted more responsibility but they wouldn't give it to him so he left.

He moved to Buffalo and took a job where he was running the show at 28.  That is when he started to go bald.  He was in over his head.  It was too much.  He had weeks where he went to work on Tuesday and didn't get home until Friday.  But he did learn a lot from this experience.

Joe's father owned a garbage collection business in Jamestown.  So Joe went back home to help run things.  He did this from 1981-1989.  Then they sold the business to Solid Waste Management.  Joe stayed on staff for another 10 years.

By 1997 Joe had had enough of the hard winters so he packed up everything and moved to Arizona.  He was able to get a transfer through the waste management company.  He worked in their Northern Phoenix division.  It was a great experience and he worked with great people but there was too much liability involved.  It was time for a change.

Joe left and became a management consultant.  During this time his nephew, Jeff Berghoff, was starting a new business.  He was only 24 and knew nothing about running a business but he was a talented landscape designer.  Joe, on the other hand, had all kinds of business experience and no talent.  It was a natural fit.

Berghoff Design Group has never had to advertise.  They have stayed very busy on referrals.  Their company now has 106 employees and will grow to 125 real soon.  They have 4 office staff, 6 designers and a crew of 4 that just handle lighting.  They have 35 construction crew members and 57 in maintenance.  They do about half residential and half commercial.  They do a project from start to finish including design, installation and maintenance.

Joe admits to being one of the hardest members to give a lead to.  He would have a hard time getting around to doing it.  (He can't even get his own home done!)  And he is not even sure if he belongs here.  He is not a business owner and the only reason his company is in MABE is via an acquisition.  But regardless, he is glad to be here.  Some are here for the leads and others enjoy the social side of the group most.  But for Joe it is the inspiration.  Many people in this group have inspired him as they have shared their own trials and successes in business and in life.

Joe, your an inspiration too!
