This week's
leads focus...
Keith Miller was today's
Business Spotlight. His spotlight topic came from an
advertisement he received from BMW on the safety of their cars.
So which cars are the safest? Race cars. When they
crash they separate into pieces which is better than being
compacted which is what would happen in your average family car.
Corvettes are your best bet as they are made of fiberglass but
be prepared to pay more in insurance.
And what would be a
Miller-speech without a jab at our diets. It takes a lot
to burn off the carbs from a Big Mac. If you must have
one, skip the car ride (which we just learned can be a death
trap anyway) and walk or bike to the restaurant instead.
May the force be with you...NOT!
Althea Bussert
AB Weaving Interiors
Althea grew up in Garner,
Iowa with a population of 2000. Growing up in a small town
means you have the opportunity to participate in almost anything
you want. Althea was in band, choir, cheer and she was
even a drum majorette. She was also a girl scout from 1st
grade through to her senior year of high school.
Garner is located near 2
famous Iowa towns. One was Mason City which the Music Man
was based on. The other is Clearwater which, as many of
you know, is where Buddy Holly played his last show before dying
in a plane crash. Althea's older brother attended that concert
and drover her out to the crash site the next day.
Althea went to college in
Minnesota. Her parents didn't have a lot of money so she
got loans, grants and also worked to pay her tuition.
Althea has always been seen as an artistic talent. When
she graduated she became an art teacher. She fought for
one particular job that enabled her to teach art at two schools
in the area where she lived. But it was short lived.
During the six months that
she worked at this job, she met a man named Jim at a wedding.
He was from California but working at DeVry in Arizona.
They had one date and 6 weeks later they married. 35 years
later they are still together.
Althea moved to Arizona with
her new husband and began teaching at a junior high school in
Mesa. She stopped teaching when she had her daughter,
Kayla. Althea began weaving which led to large tapestries
that she sold to commercial clients. One thing led to
another and she is now a highly respected interior decorator.
Althea has never advertised.
Joining MABE was the closest thing to paid advertising that she
has done. It was also the best thing she could have done
for her business. MABE makes up 95% of her business
between doing work for members and through their referrals.
Her "heart and soul goes out to all you guys."
Althea ended her speech by
briefly showing us the importance of getting samples. The
lighting is always different in your house or business.
What you see in a showroom can look completely different
elsewhere. She told us a story about one project she
worked on where the carpet was so completely different looking
from what she saw in the catalog. This project also
demoinstrated the care, time and detail that she puts into
making a job perfect for her client...even though they may not
fully appreciate it.
We appreciate you, Althea!
