Business Spotlight

Carole Weishaar was today's Business Spotlight.   She has been a member of MABE for 8 years.  During this time, like many others in the group,  she has reinvented herself.  Carole had the retail store, employees, overhead and all the headaches.  But then the industry started to self destruct.  When her rent went up, Carole gave up.  But her clients wouldn't let her go.  So Carole became an independent travel agent.  When she first joined MABE, airlines wouldn't even look at someone with her title.  But they soon realized that independent agents make up 60% of their business.  The industry has evolved.  Last year was the most phenomenal year in her career!

Carole specializes in the areas of upscale, luxury travel, business meeting planning and incentive travel.  She is an expert in European travel and customizing personal travel arrangements.  Of course for her regular customers and MABE members she will do it all.

She left us with a few words of advise.  Know that airlines do overbook.  If you buy a ticket online, avoid the first or last flight of the day.  Airlines frequently change flight schedules so always check before you travel.  And if at all possible, travel on Saturday afternoons as this is typically the slowest time.

Main Speaker

Spanky Moskowitz
Ad Voodoo and Desert Audio

Spanky felt cursed with his childhood nickname that was bestowed on him by his uncle.  That was until he got into radio and was encouraged by a program director to use the catchy name.  His interest in radio began at the young age of 11.  He spent hours in his bedroom (a.k.a. the studio) pretending to be a disk jockey.  His Jewish family was not thrilled with his interest...until they saw his first contract.

He didn't make anything at his first radio station gig.  But he got exposure.  Six months into it he got a lucky break when he was invited to join one of New York City's largest radio stations as their weekend DJ.  It was the same station that hosts the Howard Stern show.

Spanky got to experience the production side of the business and really enjoyed it.  He can do 40-50 voices!  While doing this, he also began DJ-ing at weddings, etc. to make extra money.

When his contract with the radio station ended, Spanky took a year off and came to Arizona.  He loved it here and decided to stay.  After his year off ended, he got back into the production studio, broadcasting and event DJ-ing.  He is a talented writer and enjoys producing funny commercials that are memorable and cut through the clutter.

The increasing popularity of satellite radio doesn't concern him.  They are not local and people will always flip to their local stations to hear local news, traffic and weather.

Spanky feels very blessed to be able to support his family with a career that he enjoys doing.  But the hours can be long.  To unwind, he got his pilots license and enjoys the occasional flight to Vegas.

We now know that Spanky can do a dead-on Kermit the Frog but what is his favorite voice to do?  Yoda!  May the force be with you, Spanky!
