Business Spotlight

Bob Uber was today's Business Spotlight.  Bob apologized for his poor attendance this past year.  He has been having employee problems.  He and Kathy will prepare a work schedule every evening and it will be thrown out the next day because an employee doesn't show up for work.  Their goal has always been to get to the point where they only manage the business and never have to go out in the field.  But they have worked more this past year than in any other.  Financially it is great.  But this is not how they want to work.  He asked members for suggestions.  Mike Tanner suggested offering a bonus to employees that don't miss any days during the pay period.  If anyone else has some ideas please call or email Bob...(480) 730-1985 or Sdevil72@cox.net

Main Speaker

Denver Johnson
American Tree and Landscape Company

American Tree and Landscape Company focuses on the "high work."  (Jim Bache gave testimony...Forget the ladder!  Call Denver.)  Now is a good time to have your trees trimmed.  This is particularly true of non-native trees.  You want to trim them early in the season so they have time to adjust to the increase in heat and avoid getting sunburned.  Native trees can be done anytime throughout the year.

Background Check...
Denver is from the southeastern part of the United States.  He was born in Mississippi in 1934.  His mom was 15 and his dad was 48 when they married.  They had four children.  Denver was the oldest and also boasts of being the smartest.

Most of his youth was spent sharecropping.  When he could take no more of this type of work he got into the printing business.  This was before the fancy machines that Stuart Schindler is accustomed to.  He had to do manual typesetting.  Denver also did about 14 years of military service including 5 years in the Marine Corp and then the reserves.  He eventually married, had a child and left the military to go to school.  He attended the University of Florida and earned his engineering degree then went to work for a power company.

In 1999 Denver took his retirement.  But he is not the retiring type so he went to work for his son at American Tree and Landscape Company where he handles sales, estimating and customer service.

Q&A
Denver opened up the floor to member questions.  Here are your answers...

  • Fichus trees are pretty and there are some heartier versions available if you are having trouble with what you currently have.  They even grow well in pots.

  • Citrus trees are prone to sunburn so be careful when you trim them and you may also want to paint them.  If you do trim them, you will lose some fruit.  Also watch for branches touching each other as these will become disease points.

  • Don't put native trees such as Mesquites and Palo Verdes near swimming pools as they are dirty and can damage your pools (this reply came courtesy of Bill LaLonde).

  • Palm trees have masses of blooms.  You should trim late in the season after the mass.  Otherwise the blooms become messy.

  • Queen Palms are subject to fungus.  It they turn yellow, contact Denver and he will send someone out to treat it.

  • You should do a deep root treatment about once a year.  It is the best way to feed a tree.  Denver uses a horseshoe stake to make the holes.  Go out about 1/2 the distance of the canopy to get close to the roots.  Make holes every few feet.
