Main Speaker
[membersonly/archives/former_members/kavanaugh.htm]

Paul Kavanaugh has been a member of MABE since 2002. He
is originally from Kentucky. He went into the Air Force
after graduating. After leaving the Air Force he bought his
first truck and he has been in the business ever since. In
1991 he started Mountain Moving and the business has been
growing steadily ever since.
The moving business in Arizona is like the Wild West. Why
does the industry get so many shady characters? Because you
don't have to be a rocket scientist to do this and there are
no regulations here. Everyone around us has regulations, but
Arizona doesn't. Paul is working with a group to
change this. In order to bring credibility to his own
company, Paul affiliates himself with larger, respected
national companies like Van Lines.
There are lot of crocks out there. As a consumer you should
be cautious and know what to expect.
Local moves usually have 2 offers...
-
Pay by
the Hour - This is the better option
-
Guaranteed Price - Since they are not paid by the hour
they may rush it, throwing your items in the truck
without care.
Long distance move options usually
consist of the following...
Whatever you
do, DO NOT get an internet quote. They are brokers that farm
out your move and then they are gone. You never know who
you'll get or how they'll treat your property.
Mini Moves is a company that is taking care of a part of the
industry that nobody wanted. Most companies have minimum
weight requirements. But Mini Moves will move a single piece
of furniture if that is all you need. And they do a good job
too. They have the lowest claims ratio in the business.
Right now Paul's company is doing a lot of military moves.
They are mostly "home" moves. The military is the biggest
account in the country so everyone wants a piece of the pie.
But its a complex situation dealing with the military.
Free insurance is available on moves but the coverage is
minimal. Full coverage for full replacement is recommend for
antiques and you have opt ions on deductibles.
Paul said you should never give a deposit. Pay when your
items get to delivered to the house. Also make sure you have
the proper documents - A contract and not simply an
estimate.
Arizona is the biggest inbound state right now.
California is now considered an outbound state, especially
Southern CA. Florida has more out bound traffic than they've
ever had.
