Question of the Day

What are your thoughts on the Arizona immigration bill?

The bill would have a severe impact on Mark Howard's business.  He believes it would put our whole State at an incredible disadvantage.  If you knowingly hire an illegal alien a second time you could lose your business license.

Don't keep cops of their documentation, just the I-9.

Isn't it already illegal to hire an illegal alien?  Why is this that much worse?  This bill is just a penalty increase for breaking a law that we already have and should be following.

It depends on how they enforce it.  They have to spend money to police it and they don't like to spend money.  They are counting on people to rat you out.  They will do a few high profile raids to scare people.

I don't believe illegal aliens are bringing minimum wage down or taking jobs away from anyone.  I do agree that we need to protect social security before we bankrupt it.

The same government that is fighting the war on drugs is trying to fight this too?  Our jails will be full of drug users and business owners.

Main Speaker

[membersonly/archives/former_members/passante_john.htm]

John Passante has been married 15 years and has three kids.  He moved here to Arizona 1½ years ago.  He loves the weather, the people and business is great.  But when he first got started here he thought he could drive around with a sign on his truck and the calls would come in.  If didn't happen that way.

There were two reasons he decided to join MABE. (1) His cousin Phil told him in an email to come "ride the wave". (2) The statement on the back of the brochure that read "MABE is an organization of business professionals who have established themselves successfully in the business community."  John had not done this yet.  But he hopes to establish himself  successfully in business through his involvement with this group.

In the meantime, he contributes to MABE through his character. John listed the "Six Pillars of Character" and told a story of how each has played a role in his business and affected the way he chooses to conduct himself.

  1. Trustworthiness
  2. Respect
  3. Persevere
  4. Be fair
  5. Caring
  6. Citizenship

The construction industry obeys the laws of gravity.  For elaboration see Jim Bache.
