Notable Mentions

GoDaddy.com Founder's (Bob Parsons)16 Rules for Success (The first 6...)

1. Get and stay out of your comfort zone. I believe that not much happens of any significance when we're in our comfort zone. I hear people say, "But I'm concerned about security." My response to that is simple: "Security is for cadavers."

2. Never give up. Almost nothing works the first time it's attempted. Just because what you're doing does not seem to be working, doesn't mean it won't work. It just means that it might not work the way you're doing it. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, and you wouldn't have an opportunity.

3. When you're ready to quit, you're closer than you think. There's an old Chinese saying that I just love, and I believe it is so true. It goes like this: "The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed."

4. With regard to whatever worries you, not only accept the worst thing that could happen, but make it a point to quantify what the worst thing could be. Very seldom will the worst consequence be anywhere near as bad as a cloud of "undefined consequences." My father would tell me early on, when I was struggling and losing my shirt trying to get Parsons
Technology going, "Well, Robert, if it doesn't work, they can't eat you."

5. Focus on what you want to have happen. Remember that old saying, "As you think, so shall you be."

6. Take things a day at a time. No matter how difficult your situation is, you can get through it if you don't look too far into the future, and focus on the present moment. You can get through anything one day at a time.

Restaurant Search

  • Don Ellis checked with the Ranch House.  They won't be ready until sometime in April.  Centennial Hall can't take care of us every Friday.

  • Mike Whalen talked to EVIT.  When they are on spring break or during the summer they wouldn't have staff.

  • Jana Greene found out from San Marcos that they can accommodate us for $15 per person.  It is 6 miles from here.  We would be different rooms.

Today's talk is in honor of Reg Batt.  It is one way of looking at life.  Not the only way.  Not necessarily the best way.  Just one way.

In 5 minutes, members at each table were given the task of finding as many things that they could in common but they couldn't be obvious.

Most felt they learned something new about the people at their table.

Imagine it is one year later, Feb 1, 2009.  Imagine all the work and struggle is done now and you have accomplished that one thing.  What is that one thing?  What area of life is it in (business, community, education, well being, relationships, fitness, finances)?

  • Greg Stewart - I read the one-year bible.
  • James Clark - I got in better shape and quite smoking.
  • Guy Sawyer - I learned how to work my computer.
  • Althea Bussert - I am walking into my new studio.
  • Roman Okonowski - I have learned to play the guitar.
  • Steve Chilton - I am the best at some sport.

Now consider, why that was important to you?  Now that you have accomplished it, what is possible to you?  How has it made a difference in your life?  How do you feel about yourself (proud of yourself, feel you've stretched yourself, how much have you put at stake)?

  • Althea Bussert - I have the freedom of having my own space.
  • Steve Chilton - My life would fall apart because now my goal is gone.
  • Roman Okonowski - I would have a sense of accomplishment and bring joy to other people.

Everyone could see some level of joy or satisfaction.

Sometimes you're happy, sometimes your not.  But what if there were a method to becoming happy?  Would you want to try it?  What if we took responsibility for our happiness?

It comes down to 3 things...

  1. The way you are put together (our set points).
  2. Our circumstances.
  3. Our choice (instead of deciding - ice cream example).

We look at what has happened in the past to see what we are capable of.  But what if we could close that door and see what is possible?

What if, in the face of circumstances, you decided what you wanted to do?  How would you accomplish it?  Consider that it is available.  Not in the future but right now.

Many of us have tried accomplishing a goal and it didn't work out so well.  Most of them tried it alone.  There is real power in getting somebody else on board with you - Sharing your goal or dream.  If you tell other people you could get some support.  Studies have proven that what makes a difference in our happiness is doing something for somebody else.  When you come to terms with your selfishness, it frees you up.

Is your happiness worth the effort?
