Mountain Moving & Storage is a full service moving
and storage company. We do packing, moving an storage of
household goods, computers, electronics, new furniture, show
materials and logistics. We do work for individuals and
companies large and small. We will move a couple of pieces
or a whole house load. We can move just the large pieces or
do a turn key move in which all you have to do is show up at your
new house. We can move you across the street or around the
world. We are affiliated with Pilot Air Freight, Paramont
Transportation Systems, Ryder Move Management and National Van
Lines. We are a member in good standing with the BBB of
Arizona and NFIB. |

Greg Stewart interviewed Scott Young of Mountain Moving &
Storage.
Where are you from?
I am originally from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I
transferred to the Valley in 1997 with Allied Van Lines.
I skipped and hopped around from job-to-job in Valley.
I went back to Dallas-Fort Worth for a while. I spent a
couple of years at UTA. I eventually found my way back here.
I have been with Mountain Moving & Storage for 6 months.

What did you originally want to do as a career?
I would have liked to do something in
architecture. Life didn't take me down that road.
My family is in the moving industry so that is the path I stayed on.
How do you spend your free time? Do you have any hobbies?
I am a big movie
buff. I also play professional foosball. There are
tournaments here in town.
Why did you choose to live in the Valley?
When I first came out I couldn't believe how clean the
roadways were.
What is a typical day for Scott Young?
We are small (10 employees) so my job encompasses a lot
of things. Mostly I run estimates. People
call in wanting a price for moving and I set an appointment
to do an estimate. I am all over town all day long.
What will be Mountain Moving & Storage's biggest challenges
in 2008?
Obviously the declining housing market
has affected our business a great deal. We
are scrambling right now. Our business is generated by
phone calls. You don't go knocking on doors.
Do you have some good tips?
Pricing vs. nonbinding is misleading. If you are moving out-of-state
the price is based
on tariffs set by federal law which varies from zip
code to zip code. To offer a guaranteed pricing is misleading.
It is based on weight. Not-to-exceed pricing is more
consumer friendly but still a little misleading as there is 10%
margin of error.
The railroad decommissioned in 80's and affected moving.
We can now discount tariffs whereas before we couldn't.
Shop the discount. Whoever gives the biggest
discount will have the best price.
On interstate moves we
have no control of pricing. On local moves we can be
competitive. We can adjust the quote but we still keep
it where we are not losing money.
If
an estimator is doing their job right they can come in within 5% of accuracy.
But people don't always disclose everything.
By law we have to insure your goods up to 60 cents per
pound. It is sufficient to cover repairs but not
damage beyond repair.
If you had chance take anyone in the world - living or dead
- out
to lunch, who would it be?
George Bush Sr. He was head
of the CIA. I have a lot of questions I would love to ask that man.
