Notable Mentions

Lisa Wolfe was given her prize for the big Kahuna contest.

Bob Busch had an idea!  [Applause]  Pick the 3rd week in the 3rd quarter and have a dinner out.  We'll pick a big restaurant - one that can accommodate a large group.  Members can just show up and take care of their own check.  Nothing organized.

Finding a new location is still on the table.  Jana Greene announced that we were invited to have a meeting at the San Marcos to check it out.  Their facility is nicer and more accommodating.  They may have to schedule us in different rooms but they are all next to each other and they are good about giving notice of any changes.

Barbara Kollman also knows of a location at a place, the Black Bear on Baseline between Stapley & Gilbert, with very good food (selected off of a menu).  The room would be smaller...cozier.

Today is Nick Mawrenko's last meeting as president.  He feels this group is truly like a family...a dysfunctional family!...but that is good.  He said it was his pleasure serving and thanked the group.

Question of the Day

None.

Now down to business...

His opinion on the state of the economy...

  • The consumer and housing market is in the 3rd inning.
  • The steepness in decline can create opportunity, but we are not out of the woods.
  • Continuing to lower interest rates would help.
  • We will probably see 5% interest levels on 30 year fixed mortgages.
  • We are seeing a slow down in consumer spending but not in all sectors.
  • As for inflation...It is definately out there but isolated to a few areas (food & energy).
  • The rest of the economy is countering the affects.
  • I think the feds will continue to cut interest rates.
  • Use this period to upgrade your portfolio.
  • We are optimistic at this point...We are seeing stabilization in the stock market.
  • If buying equities, buy them for the long term.
  • A lot of the price of gold has been driven by speculation.
  • Typically election years are positive on the market.
  • The devaluation of the dollar will help the economy because our exports will increase.

What happened to me over the summer...

I will send you a CD.  Listen to it.  It will bring home things I am trying to say.  As most of you know I suffered a cardiac arrest.  It lasted 20 minutes.  (He read from the paramedic notes.)  No one here is immune to having a cardiac rest.  They don't know what caused it with me.  Weight has nothing to do with it.  Take life slower.  Things that used to bother him don't bother me anymore.  Appreciate each day as it could be your last.  Of the small percentage that survive, many continue to have problems.  I am considered a miracle.
