Notable Mentions

Tuesday Board Meeting Recap:
The attendees talked about making this group again feel like a "safe place to fall."  A place where you can come and share your pain and your joy.  We want to nurture the relationships in this group.  Suggestions included getting together with a member you don't know well and have lunch.  Get to know each other better.  Lisa Wolfe would like to have lunch with everybody in here.

Another thing talked about was building the membership and the way we build it.  Lisa herself has experienced problems in this area.  She would propose that everyone invite a guest once a quarter.  People would see the value of the group.  It is hard to get to know somebody on paper.  Bring them in and give them a 3-minute introduction so we can see if they would be valuable to our group.  If there is something they can contribute to the group we can do what it takes to get them in.  This group really needs fresh energy.

Another item discussed which will be an ongoing topic is keeping a regular business plan.  Some have never done one.  Others do it less frequently than they should.  The changing economy requires us to monitor our business plans regularly.

Chris Curran needs to find others in his same position as a business owner that will hold him accountable.  He currently admits to working more in his business than on his business and he needs to change that.  This group is an incredible resource.  If any individuals in here want to be involved in this "sub" group let Chris know.  The first part of it would be data analysis.  It will be an individual thing.  The 2nd part would involve analysis.  Part 3 would identify changes that need to be made.  The 4th part, implementing and accountability. There will be work involved in this.  He anticipates this group meeting once a week.  It would involve too much to cover in the regular meeting.  Your first commitment is to call Chris and let him know you are interested in being in this group.

Mark Dreher added to Chris's idea.  He has a software program that can help companies with their analysis.  Contact Mark if you would like more information.

The MABE Challenge:
James Clark is today's speaker.  Let's all try to find him a lead this week.

Helping a Member:
If you wish to contribute money to help Carole Weishaar's family please contact Jana Greene.

Members Missing Meetings:
Bob Busch noticed that a lot of people on the roster have not attended lately.  He suggested we place some phone calls and check up on them.

And a Side Note:
Steve Chilton announced that E-Verify is working very, very well.  He lost four employees last week.  Nick Mawrenko can help you out if you need to get on the E-Verify bandwagon.

Thoughts For The Day:
Courtesy of Andy Jensen...On your way to work, let someone into your lane in traffic (basically be nice) and see how you feel.  Dr. Keith Miller suggested that yelling and screaming works better for him.  Conflict Resolution!

And from Lisa Wolfe...Do what you know how to do and have fun doing it.

Question of the Day

None.

James Clark

Affirmative Carpet Care is a "Owner Operated" residential carpet, upholstery & ceramic tile cleaning business, with over 15 years experience in this industry. I am Certified by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) in both carpet and upholstery cleaning. My goal is to provide my clients with "The Most Thorough Cleaning they have ever had as well as educating my clients so that they get the highest return on their investment in carpet & upholstery cleaning services.

I am James Clark and I am the new owner of Affirmative Carpet Care.

I was born in Germany on an Air Force base and grew up in Mesa.  I have been working with my dad since he started the business.  I can remember being on roller blades at 10 years of age handing out flyers.

I am an outgoing person.  I like to have fun and be as nice as possible.  When I am not working I enjoy doing Tae Kwon Do with my dad and sisters.  We all got into motorcycle riding.  I even started racing.  I had quite a few broken bones and hospital visits but it was a lot of fun.

My dad is still the owner on paper, but about 6 months ago I started taking over the family business, Affirmative Carpet Care.  I am still learning how to run things.  Over the next few months I will become the official new owner.  I will keep it a one truck, one man operation.  I am doing some new advertising with new flyers.  We have been running off of referrals for the past 12 years.  I would like to get some new clients.  My goal is to get to where I am doing 2-3 jobs a day...$600 per day.  Right now I am doing $300-$400.  I would also like the time to work more on the business instead of just in the business.

Taking over the business has been a big change for me.  It is real stressful.  Before, I just showed up for work with my uniform on and hopped in the truck.  Now I am in the office, on the computer, checking emails, handling phone calls, paying bills, and more.  I am still asking my dad a lot of questions.  It is a slow process.  One hurdle we have is trying to get clients used to coming to me instead of my dad.

Like my dad, I am certified with the IICRC - The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification.  This certification is not required in our industry.  You have to sit through 2 days of classes and pass a test to get certified.  There are 1000's of cleaners in the Valley but I see the same handful of faces at these classes so I know who truly cares about their craft and customers.  The most important thing I learned from my dad is that relationships with clients are very important.

We primarily do residential work but we will do some commercial work for MABE members and other existing clients.  The main thing is the pricing.  Others out their focus on commercial and can charge less.

We also clean grout and tile (ceramic and porcelain). We don't do verticals anymore.

What separates us from the competition?  Service.  We provide an excellent service.  We offer a 100% no risk guarantee and we stick to it.  The other main thing is that we are certified, bonded and insured.  All of our clients feel comfortable with us.  Many trust us to enter their homes when they are not there.

What do I expect from MABE?  I'm new to this whole business thing.  I listen to others and get ideas new things to try.  My week can get stressful.  It is a relaxed atmosphere here and helps me to wind down from the week.  But the main thing is the knowledge from everybody.

What can MABE expect from me?  I am feeling more comfortable now about giving my input and speaking my mind.  I can contribute more as I experience new things in business.
