Words of Wisdom from Dr. Keith Miller...If you look at the food today,  it is full of carbohydrates.  It burns up real quickly and we end up with high and low spikes.  Carbohydrates store in our bodies as a form of fat.  As we eat more in our meals, loading up on carbohydrates, the more clothes we need to buy...unless your run marathons.  Proteins burn up vs. storing as fat, we do less shopping, it is bad for the economy.

Nick Mawrenko has free software available to those in Chris Curran's group working on business plans.

Our meeting on May 9th will be at the San Marcos on the southeast area of Arizona Avenue and Chandler Blvd.

Inspirational Quote for the Week..."Show me a man without a goal and I will show you a future that is dictated by the strength of the wind."

Question of the Day

In light of all the negative news on the economy, lets focus on the good.  What is one good thing about your business?

  • I just refuse to listen to the news.  I've been hearing gloom and doom for 50 years.

  • Keeping a positive attitude and keep moving forward.

  • Our maintenance division seems to be going like crazy so that's a good thing.

  • Life's good.  I had my best year last year.  I don't see any gloom and doom at all.

  • Old MABE members are really helping us out.

  • Radio advertising is working well for me.  It has already paid for itself.

  • I've had the best first quarter I have ever had in the business.  We are very likely in the midst of a recovery.

  • Our business tends to be very recession proof.  But we have more people complaining about other services.

  • The majority of people surveyed believe things are improving.

  • I love it when there are customers in the store.

  • For me it has been diversification.  I heard on the news you should stay away from magnetic poles or you are at risk of suicide.  We are getting into insect season so increase your folic acid.

  • Business is very, very slow.

  • We have a caring culture in my business.  Feedback is valuable.

  • Our business is doing good.  The news doesn't affect us much.  We are attending luncheon seminars on management which is giving us a fresh look on things.

  • My business has been up the last month or so.  I have noticed in talking to business people, they are not going down.  They have leveled off.  And they are optimistic.

  • We are finding that many commercial and individual customers are asking for less work on a job.  I think the economy is turning but people are cautious about spending money.

  • It has been a challenging time for me with gold prices being so high.  At times like this I am glad I don't have to pay an extra salary.

  • What drives me is focusing on what I do and doing it well.

  • In recent months it seems like commercial work has gone up.

  • The cars business is in a fairly depressed state right now.  I am spending more time planning out my work week and doing more consulting with nonprofits.

  • Compared to most of my competitors I am doing really well.

  • I am practicing what I preach by actively marketing myself and getting phenomenal feedback.

Our SPEAKER OF THE DAY was Lin Schmelzer, President and Owner of DesignLin Advertising, Ltd. in Scottsdale.  Did you know Lin is a classically trained singer and has also sung Opera? Today she revealed "The OTHER Side Of Lin", as well as shared with MABE Members what it's like to be on an official E Bay Board.

Lin Schmelzer answers questions from Greg Stewart...

My office is in my home.  I had a large office with many employees.  About a year-and-a-half ago my lease was up.  My rate was going up and I had to make a change.  I got rid of most everything except what could fit in my home office.

When the economy is down, everyone cuts back on what they see as frivolous spending.  They stick with their current advertising designs.  I am the first to feel the downturn.  I have been through this 3 times in my career but I have never seen it this slow.  I have learned to just hold on until after the election.  It will change.

I enjoy coming to MABE every Friday morning.  I enjoy listening to what everyone has to say on different subject matters and I learn a lot from it.

Advise to anyone interested in this industry needs to learn anything they can about the current technology.  Consumers are frightened to click on flashy banners and unknown links.  It is hard to tell where advertising is heading.

Most of my clients are business to business.  I do advertising for several companies.  I do up to 40 pieces at a time.  I will do a whole series of ads and then follow-up with direct mail with a similar style.  On format just reinforces the other.

"I am a very strange person" and "I really love my anonymity".  I am involved in so many different things that people don't know about.  Being a single female, I appreciate my privacy.

I am an opera singer.  I sing classical music.  I have sung all of my life.  I have sang with 5 different symphony orchestras and done 3 operas.  It would surprise many to know that I sing soprano.

I am also a professional painter.  Large pieces.

I have a sister that teaches what I do.  She is a painter.  But different formats.  I work in oil.  My paintings are huge.  Hers are very small.  She does landscapes and I do abstracts.  I've had shows in Scottsdale.  I paint when I feel like it.  Visiting places like Sedona and Santa Fe inspires me.  Surroundings get me going.  I put a blank canvas in front of me and just go at it and something comes out of it.

I have traveled to 56 countries.  This has definitely influenced my palette.  Traveling is my favorite thing in the world to do.  I would love to do it for a living.

I have buying and selling things on E-Bay since 2000.  They keep track of everything!  I received an email from them asking me to be on a board.  I then had an hour long phone interview.  I was notified that I was selected and flown to Santa Fe.  They listen to our opinions.  We have weekly conference calls.  Sellers can no longer leave negative feedback affective yesterday.  They were using it to retaliate against buying who left them negative feedback.  They have done it to themselves.

How would friends describe her?  True Blue.
