Treasurer Report
The quarterly dues billing went out 9/1.  They are now past due.  Please contact Melissa Matthews if you did not receive your e-invoice.

Economic Commentary
Gus Dekavallas - A lot of people are concerned about their retirements.  If you don't need your money in the next 2-3 years, leave it.  The problem now is that the credit markets are frozen up.  Until those markets open up the Dow will be up and down.  In 3-5 years it will rebound.  Fear is driving the market right now.  I sell annuities and we have guarantees on them.

Andy Jensen - I second everything Gus said.  Usually the best thing to do is let the dust settle.  Things are falling into place and will snowball until we hit rock bottom.  We could be up 600-800 points today.  Who knows.  Its hard to say.  If you don't need the money, the best thing to do is stay put.  And if you have some courage, there are some good companies at very good prices.  There is no where to hide right now.  Everything has gone down.  Most portfolio managers are subject to the fear in the market.

Mark Dreher - While all the bad new is going on you still have to run your business.  I sent out an articles earlier this week.  It said the same thing Gus and Andy said.  Don't panic but be prudent.  Watch your accounts receivable.  The other thing to do is talk to your customers.  It is amazing what you will hear and learn to better manage your accounts.  The squeaky wheel does get paid faster.  Be super aggressive...in a nice way if you can do it.  Take that 2% hit and accept the credit card.

Obligatory Personal Stuff

I came over on the boat in 1953.  I grew up in New York and it was a wonderful experience.  In 1966 I joined the Air Force.  Those were the best years of my life.  I didn't realize what the government was all about when I was 18 years old, but I figured it out.  I volunteered for Vietnam and went to Spain!  There was no combat involved.  We practiced rescue and recovery.  I felt really useful there.  Spain was beautiful.  After I got out I came here and got married.  We have a daughter and I just became a grand daddy.  That was one of those experiences that makes you stop and realize you are old!

The Employment Cycle
When you do billing by the hour, people are hesitant about calling you.  To account for this we decided to bundle services together.  From the moment you are thinking about hiring a person to termination, we can help save you money.  It is the employment cycle that we want to communicate to people. Ignorance of the law is no defense.  One of the things we list as a service is that we will do the E-verify and reporting for less than $5.  Nobody can do it the inexpensive as us because we have the systems in place and do so many at a time.

Effort
The paradox of effort.
.
While luck may be more appealing than effort, you don't get to choose luck. Effort, on the other hand, is totally available, all the time.

Mark Dreher's article was great and, if you haven't read it, you need to.  The minute the cash flow is hesitant or stops, it shows your weaknesses.  The weak companies that depend on cash flow close first.  Get back to basics.

"Refuse to criticize other, complain, or blame others for anything.  Resolve to make progress rather than excuses.  Keep your thoughts and your energy focused forward, on what you can do right now to improve your life, and let the rest go." -

  • Try to stay the course.
  • Try to save your money when times are good and you can rely on that savings during the hard times.
  • Take a look at your customers and segment them.  Talk to your customers.  If you are perceived as somebody that stood by them during tough times, they will stay with you when times get good.  It is a good time to build market share.
  • Your best friend right now can be your landlord.  Do your homework first then talk to them.
  • This too shall pass.

Whatever is going on with your business right now, you are not alone.  Talk to others in the group.  It can help.
