We are getting ready for our 43rd "peaceful" transfer of power.  I've enjoyed this election.  If I chat with someone that likes Obama, I like McCain...and vice versa.  What makes a person qualified to be president?  The most electoral votes.  I encourage you all to vote.  I also encourage you to consider some important ballots. - Chris Curran

The penalty for not allowing your employees to vote is up to $750 and jail time. - Nick Mawrenko

Main Speaker - Fred and Dave Vandervort

Fred Vandervort - I have been a member of MABE since 1993.  I was born and raised in Cincinnati.  I have been married to Carole for 45 years.  We have two children, Jill and Dave, and one grandson.  Education-wise, I made it through high school.  My senior prom was covered by Life magazine.  After graduating college I went to work for  Kraft Food.  He also worked for Schlitz Brewing Company and Miller Wholesale.  Throughout his career he worked in sales and marketing.

Before I came here, I lived in update New York.  I was fed up with the snow and cold.  The opportunity came to go out on my own, a new franchise came out called FASTSIGNS .  It was a company based in Dallas that had a new process using adhesive vinyl.  It was a simple process, cutting figures and letters out of vinyl and adhering them to a substrate.  I came here and opened the first FASTSIGNS store in Arizona.  There are now 10 or 11 Fast Signs in Arizona.  Mine was he 38th in the nation.  Now there are over 450 stores worldwide.    I stayed at the first location in Mesa until area started to decline.  I closed it and combined it with my Tempe store.

My history with the sign industry is working with adhesive-back vinyl.  It was very simple.  At the beginning a lot of our business was just banners, magnetics, window lettering...things like that.  Now the facilities and machines that are available are very complex.  Business has done very well.  We expanded quite a bit.  We can print on just about anything.  My favorite phrase is "You need a sign to go into business and need a sign to go out of business" so I benefit from both sides of the economy.  But the industry passed me by and now my son has been running it.

Dave Vandervort - Technology is going green.  Instead of manually applying layers on top of layers we use inks in our current process that don't emit any gases into the environment.  They are also low energy.  In combination with that, we have a cutter that can cut the images into shape.  Signs don't have to be square anymore.  You can think outside of the box when advertising or promoting your business.  You can create something more eye catching and original...while being environmentally friendly.

Biofoam is a new product that they carry.  We can purchase it in bulk and therefore sell it for same price as the regular foam board.  The difference is that regular foam board takes 80-450 years to decompose!  This is a short-term product if used outside.  It will hold up to the elements maybe a month.  Corrugated plastic is usually used out doors but I haven't found a biodegradable alternative for that yet.

When do you need signs?  What kind of signs are you allowed to have outside your business?  City codes usually want you to be as small and discreet as you can.  But you can get around some of the strict rules.  You can place a banner under your sign name but you can't have your business name on the banner.   Holiday decorations are illegal.  You are allowed to put them up 2-3 weeks before the holiday.  But following the rules, you can put up a holiday banner to help draw in business.  If we make a holiday banner for you we will give you 25% off.  But remember, you can't put your name on the banner and it must put underneath your business name.

How fast is fast?  Fast is a very subjective term.

Technology continues to advance.  The possibilities of what you can do to promote your business are endless.  Visit FASTSIGNS and see what they can do for you.

Companies worldwide are becoming more aware of the need to utilize products and processes that are environmentally friendly. This call also extends down to smaller, individually owned businesses—including FASTSIGNS® sign and graphics centers.

FASTSIGNS continues to search out alternative products to meet the growing needs of our environmentally-conscious customers, while creating processes in our centers that are mindful of the environment for future generations.

Some environmentally responsible products are:

BIOflex™ is a durable white, flexible substrate readily available in seamless up to 16' 4'' (5.00m). Tear and fade resistant, it will withstand all types of weather conditions. BIOflex™ has been engineered to be the FIRST truly environmentally friendly, biodegradable PVC. It is well suited for applications that require a front-lit digitally printed sign or banner.

Xanita X-Board is a 100% natural fibre based sandwich board which has an internal core made from 100% recycled kraft. After its useful life it can again be repulped, making it 100% eco-friendly and assisting in reducing unfriendly landfill around the globe. X-Board is available in kraft or white top laminate depending on the final application requirements.

What are we doing today?

Many FASTSIGNS locations are becoming more environmentally-friendly by embracing UV curable print technology and using eco-solvent inks, which releases less waste into the air and promotes a cleaner environment. New centers opening with solvent printers use air purification systems to capture harmful vapors instead of venting them into the atmosphere.

FASTSIGNS centers are also offering more environmentally-friendly material options as an alternative to the standard banner and sign materials—and we’re keeping our eyes open for new eco-aware offerings that are coming onto the market.

Other initiatives currently in place by FASTSIGNS centers to do their part in preserving the environment include:

  • As possible, use products that are recycled or recyclable (ie:  printer paper, old signs, materials scraps)

  • Dispose of hazardous materials properly (ie:  inks)

  • Consideration of purchasing products with minimum packaging or are sold in bulk, thereby reducing waste

  • Recycling toner cartridges through manufacturers

  • Using energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs

  • Turn off unused equipment during nights and weekends

These are only the beginning steps. FASTSIGNS International and our FASTSIGNS centers worldwide are committed to improving processes today for a better, cleaner, safer environment tomorrow.
