Speaker Update
January 9th - ???

Treasurer Report
The quarterly dues billing was e-mailed on 12/1.  T Please contact Melissa Matthews if you do not receive your e-invoice.

How do you feel about the speed cameras?

  • Carole Weishaar - I got caught.  My first ticket in 40 years.  I deserved it.  Be careful driving through Tempe.
  • Chris Curran - Law 101 - A civil traffic complaint, you have to be personally served.  If criminal, it can be by mail.  Read what you get.  If not served it will be dismissed after 120 days unless the city requests an extension.
  • Joe Zingale - I deal with this A LOT.  I have found, if it is a business vehicle, I write the authorities and tell them we have a fleet and don't know who was driving at the time.  All have been dismissed except in Paradise Valley.
  • Charles Hultstrand - If you let it go to the extent of being served personally, you can expect to pay additional fees to cover the cost of being served.
  • Bill LaLonde - We gave them the name and address of the employee and they served him.  The employee wasn't happy.
  • Chris Curran - If you have your employees listed on your business policy, your insurance rates could increase.
  • (Fight between the lawyers!)

Other Items

Mike Whalen - I just got a notice that I have to pay the City of Mesa $20 a year for the privilege of collecting tax for them!

Caroline Vandervort passed away this week.  Jana Greene will send an arrangement to the home.  Fred needs his friends right now.  Call him for lunch or a movie.

Steve Chilton has a potential new member.  A criminal lawyer is interested in joining our group.  If there are no objections, he will get the first page of the application completed.

There won't be a formal meeting on the 2nd of January.  Dave Lathrop will plan an informal get together.

Main Speaker - James Clark
I've been in the industry about 7 years now.  I started working for my dad while in high school.  I took over the whole operation about a year ago.  I still ask him questions.

I was born in Germany.  Bothh of my parents were in the Air Force.  Only other real jobs I've had - Subway, selling subscriptions.  I was never really into school sports.

Carpet Spot Demonstration

James handed out bottles of Spot Out to members.  Another good spotter to have around your house is Oxy Clean granules.  Spot solutions also work good in a load of laundry.

The best thing to use first is hot water.  Get your tap water as hot as you can.  A white cotton towel is best to use.

You don't want to pour any liquid on the carpet or it could lead to a bigger spot.

Use enough water to saturate, not dripping.  Push into carpet.  Fill fiber up with water.  Use blotting technique.  When its brand new, its best to dry it up but not all the way.  Its best to work the stain when its moist, before it makes a permanent bond.  If its a large spot or harder one to get out, you will want something stronger than hot water.

If using spotter, just use a little bit.  If you use too much, you won't get it all rinsed out and it will attract dirt and you will end up with a big dark spot.  After about 15-20 minutes (don't let it dry) rinse the area with cold water.  Use the same process - saturate cloth and blot.  Don't scrub it.  It was cause the carpet fibers to unravel and look lighter than the rest of the carpet.  You might have to do the process a couple of times to get the soap out.  Then find a dry clean area of the towel and blot further.  The idea is not to get any moisture to the bottom.  And don't get to aggressive when blotting.

T A C T

Temperature - Hot water

Agitation - For him, high pressure water.  If you can't use agitation, let it sit longer

Chemical - Spotter

Time - Let it dwell 15-20 minutes allow chemical to do its job

Stain guard gives you time.  The liquid won't seep down as fast.  It also helps block dyes.  Red wine is not like an acid dye.  Things with natural colors are a lot harder to get out.  (Tip from Bob Busch - White wine used on a red wine stain will get it out.)

Marketing - We've tried mailings, phone blasts.  Nothing seems to work well this year.  My dad is working on the website.  Our main marketing has been to current clients and their referrals.

The only voiding of carpet warranty that James has heard of is if you don't get your Scotch Guarded carpet professionally cleaned on schedule.  He has not heard of the Dyson concern.  He in fact uses a Dyson because of how well it works on carpets with pet hairs, etc.
