Coming to Terms with Dave Trout's Passing
Joe Zingale shared some information he learned about Dave Trout that helped put him at ease about his sudden death.  A couple of years ago Dave had a small stroke and was put on blood thinners.  Shortly before he passed away he stopped taking his blood thinners.  In addition, he had struggled with his cholesterol which was over 400.  Again, he didn't want to take medication for it.  He also had a family history of heart-related deaths.  He passed away on top of his game.  He was in the best shape of his life.  He had lots of friends and died while doing something he loved.

Creating a Gap
"
I'm not interested in more of the same."  Dave Lathrop would like to encourage members to use MABE as an opportunity to create a gap.  Set new goals.  Be it lowering your golf handicap or running a further distance or losing weight.  It could be fitness, activities, business-related...anything.  Say what it is you are after and make a resolution to do it.  Know that reaching your goals takes time and effort.

Main Topic - Punishing Yourself for Your Failures
We've been talking about how you take care of yourself both physically and emotionally.  Today we will talk about punishing yourself for your failures..."How's that goin' for ya?"  Motivating or double negative?

  • Althea Bussert - I have invented several products and tried to get them going.  Got so far but couldn't get to that next step.  I put so much money and time into it, and believed in it, but still not getting there.  I would look at myself as a failure.  I projected that onto my interior design.  I punished myself emotionally.  Down the road I will hopefully see myself as successful in both endeavors.
  • Guy Sawyer - I found this topic interesting.  I tend not to worry about things I have no control over.  But my wife...
  • Dave Crissman - The type of person I am gets me in trouble.  It is not so much punishing myself but remembering to keep balance and holding myself accountable.  While I don't punish myself, there is punishment there.
  • Chris Curran - Punishment means different things to different people.  I can relate closely to what Althea described.  My title company took most of my resources and then the economy...  I am just now starting to get over it.  I now have the "forge ahead" mentality and changing the way I do business.   I fight against entities that can crush me like a bug.  Life's lessons can sometimes be expensive.
  • Lin Schmelzer - On a personal level, after I went through a divorce I put myself into a limbo period where I did absolutely nothing for three years.  One day I woke up.  I booked a trip to Europe and went alone.  From that point forward I got back into life.  Sometimes it takes time to get through things.
  • Gus Dekavallas - I have had three careers in my life.  On of the things I see is that a lot of people are so close to success and don't realize it before giving up.  Successful people don't dwell on failures, they learn from them.
  • Dave Lathrop - If you're not failing, you're not trying.
  • Greg Stewart - How we handle things depends on our individual makeup and our influences.  When I've had a failure, and I have many, I don't brood on it.  Like my father, I acknowledge it and move on.

Dave Lathrop summed up the topic...  I was excited about the way the conversation went.  It is about what can empower you to go forward.  What are you willing to take responsibility for?
