Today's Program - Going from Good to Great
Presented by Jeff Sutherlin

What can we do this year to take MABE from Good to Great?

  • I believe it starts with the individuals.  Everyone needs to come out of their comfort zones.  It helps us relate to each other more which brings us closer.  Be vulnerable.

  • There is not "one" thing to do.  We have to be more involved in MABE.  It can happen at smaller levels.  Have committees - It is hard to get things done as a large group, lose focus.  Perhaps have a committee that will help struggling members.  Take it externally.  More community involvement.

  • In the book he talks about finding the right people.  We lost good members because we brought in the wrong people.  We need to find not only the right people, but expand to larger companies.

  • We are really poor at coaching a new member.  If someone starts to drift, we let them.

  • We lost our consistency.  There was turnover.  And we lost our trust.  We are getting back to that again.  Our group is unique in that we are more like family.  We have the same problems and should be able to let that all hang out at MABE.

  • It is hard to get to know each other at the morning meeting.  More ways to get together (buddy lunches, socials) would help.

  • We need to challenge each other.

  • Good groups talk about this stuff.  Great groups initiate it.

  • You need ground rules (bylaws) and you need conditions.  Then you need to call people out on it.

  • The group is about building relationships which is hard to do at the meeting.  I don't feel that we need to have a structured meeting every week.  We could have more informal, get to know each other better meetings.

  • What does "great" look like?  How do we know when we get there?

  • We need to be able to the news out there good or bad, anonymous or not.  I want to know if I wronged somebody so I can fix/improve that.

  • We need accountability.

  • We need to remind others of our value, not our price.

  • Coming to the meeting early to visit is like having a buddy lunch.

What is the right person?

  • Someone that shows leadership.  But be careful about someone with an "ego".  They need to fit into our culture.

  • Someone that wants to get involved.

  • Integrity.

  • We shouldn't settle for anybody just to fill a spot.

  • We need to have strict criteria/guidelines so that we don't become another BNI.

  • We can't be afraid to cut bait when we need to.

  • We lowered our standards a few years ago.  We need to change that.

  • Caring about each other.

  • Quality over Quantity.

  • We could put into place a process for finding a candidate for a category.

Think about this discussion throughout the week.  We will then work on implementing these ideas.
